Flashy vs. Simple Websites

When you think of a great website, do you think flashy and cutting edge or do you think classic, simple and functional? Most brands thing that they are gaining a competitive edge when they go for that flashy website that grabs a user’s attention. But is this really the best tactic? At RM SEO, your Atlanta digital marketing experts, we always recommend simple.

Simple websites are trending for a reason. When it comes to your website, you just need it to work and be easy for customers to convert. That’s what they are there for, conversions. When you start to get crazy with the flashiness, you start to confuse users. When they get confused, they leave. You don’t want them having to search for things on your website. You want the flow of your site to be simple and easy. You want them to come and find what they are looking for without digging through a bunch of useless stuff to do so.

Don’t get me wrong, flashy websites can be cool and effective. There are instances of this being the best course of action. But 9 times out of 10, you want to keep it simple. When we say simple, I don’t mean boring. You can still have color. You can still make it look cool and visually appealing. You just don’t need to go overboard with it. Instead of focusing on videos or flash players, focus on content, typography and use of color. Not only does this look good, it helps your SEO efforts as well.

It’s easier for Google to keep up with your website if they aren’t constantly trying to keep up with all kinds of crazy content. The goal of SEO is to make your website search engine (and user) friendly. If your website is over the top complex, your overwhelming HTML readability, inadvertently affecting how your website ranks. Search engines crawl your sight through a technical lens, meaning keeping the design simple and highlighting text will boost your SEO efforts.

Another reason to keep it simple is load times. The speed and performance of your website also effects your ranking. The more you put on there, the slower it loads. A simple site will always load faster than a complex site. Faster load times mean higher customer satisfaction, meaning higher ranking. In the end, all you want to do is give the user a great experience. If you don’t they will go to your competitor.

We recently created a website for a contracting company that can be seen by visiting As you can see, this website is simple and effective. The home page tells you about the company and shows you a picture of a house they are currently building. Across the top you have tabs that you can easily navigate through. There are separate tabs for residential projects and commercial projects. A prospective customer can come to the site and look at what Miller Contracting has to offer, then contact them if they want to learn more. It’s simple and leads to conversions. That’s all you need. If you get too “cute”, you’re just going to drive customers away. It’s just how it works.
